City of Gods
|
I bought the City of Gods movie DVD last weekend. I don’t know what the movie is all about when I bought it. It was a gamble. What attracted me in the first place was the cover. It shows a beautiful sun tanned girl with long hair kissing an African boy on the cheek. Their back facing the camera.
Flipped the case, saw some stills showing kids with guns. The synopsis didn’t mention anything about love stories so I figured it is safe for my viewing! I still don’t know why I bought it but I’m glad I did.

City of Gods is a story about the live kids growing up in the slums of Rio de Janeiro particularly of Rocket the kid who became a photographer. Rocket narrates through the movie from his childhood to becoming a photographer. The film starts of with a flashback into the childhood of Rocket with the introduction of all the main characters that shaped Rocket’s life. Soon you will realize the mentality of these kids in the forgotten part of Rio. Mugging and robbing people is their ticket to becoming rich.
You are considered to be lucky if you live until your 18 birthday in City of Gods. Some of Rockets friends did and they became drug dealer. From there Rocket narrates how he ended up at the first scene of the movie. The beginning of the end.
The film boast some nice shots, nice colors, good screenplay, actors and good subtitles… the dialogues in Portuguese. If you like movies such as Fight Club that let you have a peek in to urban subculture, give City of Gods a try.
