I wish I was religious! My mom went to the temple for the whole 9 days. She will bring back 'prasatham' and food from the temple everynight. I have to say the taste of puli soru(rice) over the years have evolved into tomato soru.

Tuesday, October 26, 2004   Make time
This past week I was super busy. Even my friend wondering what happened to me. Briefly the main culprit for this was my University assignment, my broken PC and work. From next semester I think I should take 2 subjects instead of 3. 3 subjects, 3 assignments, 9 quizzes are just too much for my brain to take. However I did enjoy myself last Sunday. I went with Kar Fai to the usual MTB site in Meru. The climb was full of mud and the downhill was sweet. The secret is low tire pressure. You can lean over like a Moto GP rider and still have enough grip on the trail. After the ride we went for Indian food. I had Sardine Parata and Milo. A good weekend compared to the last. Speeking of last week, Veerappan was the hot topic. This week it's 7G Rainbow Colony & Rajini.

Saturday, October 09, 2004   Sri Lanka handball team vanishes
Somebody should turn this into a movie German authorities say they are puzzled by the disappearance of the entire national handball team from Sri Lanka. German Sports Exchange Programme organiser, Dietmer Doering, said: "We initially thought the team had got lost in nearby woods while jogging." But he said a note had been found saying the 23-strong team had gone to France. "We now know they crossed into Italy," Mr Doering said. "They even left their dirty laundry," he added. - BBC Read more

Friday, October 08, 2004   City of Gods
I bought the City of Gods movie DVD last weekend. I don’t know what the movie is all about when I bought it. It was a gamble. What attracted me in the first place was the cover. It shows a beautiful sun tanned girl with long hair kissing an African boy on the cheek. Their back facing the camera. Flipped the case, saw some stills showing kids with guns. The synopsis didn’t mention anything about love stories so I figured it is safe for my viewing! I still don’t know why I bought it but I’m glad I did.

Image from www.slantmagazine.com
City of Gods is a story about the live kids growing up in the slums of Rio de Janeiro particularly of Rocket the kid who became a photographer. Rocket narrates through the movie from his childhood to becoming a photographer. The film starts of with a flashback into the childhood of Rocket with the introduction of all the main characters that shaped Rocket’s life. Soon you will realize the mentality of these kids in the forgotten part of Rio. Mugging and robbing people is their ticket to becoming rich.
You are considered to be lucky if you live until your 18 birthday in City of Gods. Some of Rockets friends did and they became drug dealer. From there Rocket narrates how he ended up at the first scene of the movie. The beginning of the end.
The film boast some nice shots, nice colors, good screenplay, actors and good subtitles… the dialogues in Portuguese. If you like movies such as Fight Club that let you have a peek in to urban subculture, give City of Gods a try.

  Mykad
Today I went to JPJ Shah Alam to change my IC into Mykad. I went there expecting the place to be less crowded. The counter lady gave my que number 714! The current number was 614. Not to bad I said to myself. 614 didn’t move to 615 for 15 min. Horror.
Determined not to let the Malaysian civil service beat me I decided to stay instead of coming another day. While I was sitting there listening to other people’s complaints about the slow que, a mother and her child came and sat beside me. The child was running around normally. Then the mother started to feed him and he almost finish the whole bottle when he started to puke!. The whole row was vacated.
I went outside trying to escape the smell. Outside I meet a chap who works in the same floor as I am. We asked each other’s que number, and he handed me a ticket numbered 707. He took 2 tickets so he can offered it to a beautiful chick. Super. I made a mental note to follow this technique.
My number came, I went to the counter, everything went fine until the clerk in charge ask me to pay a compound of $30. This according to her was because I didn’t change my IC on my 18th birthday. WTF, I thought the compound was waived. No according to her. After paying I asked my friend about this and he said he didn’t have to pay. Something fishy going on here. The 3 hour + wait had left me in no fighting mood. I got the receipt so I decided to challenge this when I collect the stupid Mykad.

Friday, October 01, 2004   First US Presidential debate
Yesterday was my last day at work. I will be joining the same company with the same salary and with the same position next Friday. Don’t ask me why as I’m not interested in explaining about my job. So today I’m at home. Got up 10 min before 8. Watched the American presidential candidate debate live over CNN 9.10a.m. What I liked about American politician is the way they structure their speech. Some how it sound’s clear, to the point and powerful. For example the speeches given by Bush after 9/11. After watching the drama West Wing over TV, I found out there was a person(s) writing those speeches. In today’s debate however they won’t have the luxuries of a speech writes handing out the speech. In the first couple of questions both Bush and Kerry was trying to be comfortable with each other. They were not really responding to the question but looked as though trying to dish out some of the answers they practices in their mock debate.
Bush was going the well-traveled path asking the American people to remember 9/11. This made me feel the attack on Iraq was justified. But Kerry countered that the threat was Osama and not Saddam. He made some great points regarding nuclear arms in Russia that need to accounted for. Under Bush’s policy it will take 14 years, Kerry promised 4 years. Both agreed nuclear weapons are the most dangerous threat America faces. Bush kept mentioning about what he is doing now is hard work, may be he is trying to say Kerry couldn’t do any better that him. Kerry known for contradicting himself in the past on Iraq has remained consistent. He admitted he made mistakes regarding Iraq before, but he changed according to the situation. Bush didn’t and American casualty in Iraq grows. Kerry caught couple of Bush own statement and turns it against him. They were couple of time Bush try to rebut them seconds after Kerry finished his delivery. The debate won’t be described as fierce but Kerry did some good work for his party by delivering his opinion clearly and backing them with ‘facts’. Bush relied on some of his post 9/11 “we must defeat them” speeches and Kerry’s past inconsistent as his ammo. Overall I don’t think the first debate will move the undecided voters to any camp significantly.
